The Hayes Community

The Hayes Community

When we return to campus, community building and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) will be our priority. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) defines SEL as, “the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.” As an organization, Cardinal Hayes is committed to develop a detailed plan to reengage all students, staff and families. The school is in the process of creating a committee of individuals who will be able to organize, plan and develop SEL programming for faculty, students and parents. The committee will seek input from administration, guidance counselors, faculty, students and parents. SEL will not just be a talking point, but embedded in our curriculum and the fabric of our school’s identity.

At this time we have not determined whether or not we will be able to offer mass each morning. If we are unable to do so, we will provide links to live and recorded daily masses posted by the Archdiocese of NY.

We will continue to offer our students opportunities to participate in daily prayer and spiritual formation as well as co-curricular programs and activities while ensuring everyone’s safety. We look forward to sharing these plans with you in the coming weeks.

Athletics

The New York State CHSAA (NYSCHSAA) met on July 20, 2020 and decided to postpone the start of Fall Sports to at least September 21, 2020 due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and our concerns for the safety of Catholic High School student athletes.  Should conditions cause the Fall season to be further postponed or canceled, the NYSCHSAA is prepared to hold three condensed athletic seasons for the 2020-2021 school year when conditions permit.  Please note that decisions regarding the 2020-2021 sports season will be based upon the mandates and instruction of the Governor of New York, the New York Department of Education and Health, as well as the educational leadership of the Archdiocese of New York, the Diocese of Brooklyn, the Diocese of Buffalo, and the Diocese of Rockville Centre.

We will share more information about our plans for fall sports in the coming weeks.

Extracurricular Clubs & Field Trips

The school will not allow for any extracurricular activities, programs or clubs to take place on site after school. The school will encourage club moderators and athletics directors to provide students with virtual options for each of their clubs and activities. A full list of available clubs will be provided in early September.

Until further notice, all field trips will be suspended.
