The mission of the English Department of Cardinal Hayes High School is fivefold: to engender a love of literature through thoughtful analysis of selected novels, short stories, plays, essays, and poems; to improve students’ reading comprehension; to intensify students’ ability to write well-developed, detailed, grammatically correct essays; to improve students’ speaking and listening skills; to insure successful results in the PSAT, the SAT and the English Regents. Our goal is to develop intelligent, well-read, energetic students who are passionate about reading, writing and rhetoric.
