Happy Earth Day 2021

Happy Earth Day 2021. Fifty-one years ago, Peace Activist, John McConnell, at a conference in 1969 San Francisco, proposed a day to honor the earth and bring about the concept of peace. Each year on April 22nd we do our part to observe this day by making positive changes, choices to protect the environment in which we all live and breathe. What is the hope for Earth Day? It’s a day to change human behavior and encourage policy change. Here are a few highlights of Earth Day throughout the decades:
  • Earth Day in the 1970’s brought about environmental accomplishments and environmental legislation. We witnessed the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the banning of lead and DDT in gasoline.  The Environmental wins included the following; the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act, Superfund, Toxics Substances Control Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

What can we focus on in our communities today?
  • Recycle. When you see garbage on the ground, consider carefully picking it up and recycling or throwing away.
  • Stop using plastic water bottles as this requires millions of barrels of oil to create. Instead take advantage of refillable eco-friendly water bottles to consume your water each day.
  • Plant a tree, or flowers to help clean the air and produce more oxygen. And then make it a point to spend more time outside and fall in love with our beautiful planet.
  • Volunteer with a climate organization and lend your voice to change and participate in Earth Day activities, not just on Earth Day but throughout the year.
  • Ride a bike or walk to reduce your carbon footprint.
  • Reduce the number of catalogs and junk mail you receive each day.
  • Use recyclable bags rather than plastic bags as manufacturing plastic bags places marine life in danger.
  • Take a moment to google Earth Day Live and see what others around the world are doing to observe Earth Day.
Happy Earth Day and thank you for protecting the environment we all live in. All it takes is making one positive change today!
