Cardinal Hayes High School announces the appointment of Michael E. Carey, M.B.A, Psy.D. as new School President

BRONX, N.Y. — July 15, 2020 — Cardinal Hayes High School announces the appointment of Michael E. Carey, M.B.A, Psy.D. as the school’s third president effective July 3, 2020. Dr. Carey succeeds the Rev. Joseph P. Tierney, Hayes president since June 2004, who is resuming parish work.

“Father Tierney dedicated 16 years to Hayes. We would not be as successful as we are today without his efforts,” said Eugene W. Harris ‘69, chair of the Hayes board of trustees. “The Board will be commemorating his tenure at a later date, once social distancing guidelines allow.”
Father Tierney’s tenure was punctuated by several successes: consistently, Hayes seniors graduated and were accepted to their college of choice at rates greater than 95%; Tierney guided Hayes through its 2010 transition to a financially independent school; and he led a multimillion dollar fundraising campaign — the largest in the history of the school — to celebrate Hayes’ 75th anniversary in 2016. Throughout his years as president, Father Tierney logged thousands of miles, engaging with Hayes alumni across the United States.

“Father Tierney is the face of Hayes across the country. He has left an indelible mark on this school and I am proud to follow in his footsteps,” stated Dr. Carey.

“As president one of Dr. Carey’s key roles is working with the development team, alumni and friends of Hayes to solicit grants and gifts. However, given the psychological effects of COVID-19 on our community for example, the potential for increased levels of stress and anxiety, I think he is especially well suited to help address those concerns,” said Harris.

A Westchester County resident, Dr. Carey joins Hayes after 13 years at Manhattan College where he was most recently associate vice president and dean of students. He began his education career in 1990, as a teacher at his alma mater Fordham Preparatory High School. Beyond education, Carey has spent the last 20 years as a psychologist in private practice. Areas of expertise include: academic administration, multi-cultural counseling, outcomes and assessment, crisis intervention and team building.

Carey earned a Bachelor of Arts in religious studies from Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, New York) followed by a Master of Science in clinical psychology from San Francisco State University (San Francisco, California), a Master of Business Administration from Manhattan College and a Doctor of Psychology, specializing in clinical psychology, from the California Institute of Integral Studies (San Francisco, California).

Cardinal Hayes Memorial High School for Boys opened its doors in September 1941 and is located at 650 Grand Concourse, Bronx, New York 10451. Tuition for the 2020-2021 academic year is $7,000 annually plus fees. However the real cost is approximately $13,000 per year per student. Since 2010, Hayes has been financially independent of the Archdiocese of New York. The Hayes board of trustees, in conjunction with the administration, is charged with raising the approximately $12 million annual budget to facilitate the day-to-day operations of the school and educate the 940 person student body (student body figure based on the 2019-2020 academic year data). Revenue comes from three primary sources: tuition and fees, grants and fundraising. For more information visit cardinalhayes.org or call 718-292-6100.
