Cardinal Hayes mourns the passing of William James Stetter

William James Stetter
June 26, 1928 - June 27, 2020

William James Stetter passed away peacefully Saturday, June 27th, 2020 at his home in Ocean Pines, Maryland, the day after his 92nd birthday. He was born in the Bronx, New York, and was the son of the late Joseph and Clara Gauss Stetter. His beloved wife, Hilde, passed away last July at the age of 90, also in their home. Bill survived the passing of his brother, Alfred, more than twenty years ago; and the passing of his sister-in-law (coincidentally Hilde's sister) just last year. He is survived by their daughter, Christine Williams and husband Jonathan, of New Canaan, Connecticut and grandchildren Justin Williams and his fiancee Regina Nettleton; Morgan W. Sanford and husband Jonathan; Logan Williams and his wife Margaret, Lauren Williams and great-grandaughter, Lucy Gabrielle Sanford. Also surviving is a niece, Connie Hartz, and husband Steve, nephew Bill Stetter and wife Eileen; niece Joan Petersen and husband Steve; and 8 grand nieces and nephews.

Bill attended Cardinal Hayes High School and received a football scholarship to the College of the Holy Cross. At the Cross, he was a four year letter winner in football and baseball and was named to the All East, All New England and Honorable Mention All American football teams in 1949. After graduating, Bill played for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the American Football League, and then entered the service during the Korean War and rose to the rank of Captain, and again displayed his athletic talents playing and coaching football at Ford Dix and Fort Benning. After the service, he joined the management team at F&M Schaefer Brewing Co. , and later was a sales manager for Chemed, Inc., a division of W. R. Grace. Retiring after 27 years, Bill enjoyed his second career teaching Business and coaching football at Cardinal Hayes and Holy Cross High Schools, and later taught at St. Peter's College; due to his influence as a teacher and coach, he was named President of the NY Chapter of the EAIFO.

Over twenty years ago, Bill and Hilde moved to Ocean Pines, Maryland, where Bill's lifelong passion for golf served as a cornerstone of his later years, along with his continued faith and love for family and friends. We'd like to thank all who have offered their condolences as it is through these remembrances of his charisma and humble kindness that we can take comfort in the memory of Bill.
