Mission Statement
The mission of the Technology Department is to integrate safe data and multimedia technology into the schools curriculum, instruction, and administrative applications, to help facilitate meaningful learning experiences in an environment with technology as a useful tool.
Students can and do learn more efficiently when technology is integrated into the curriculum and used in an inquiry-based approach that involves higher order thinking skills. Student achievement can be maximized only when teachers are adequately trained and regularly updated on the instructional implementation of near state of the art instructional technology equipment. It is our belief that technology integration will increase student achievement, effectiveness of instruction, and efficiency of the school. We strive to provide current equipment and adequate professional development and access to information for all teachers, administrators and staff.
Specifically, the Technology Department is dedicated to the delivery of information solutions that advance the tactical and strategic objectives of Cardinal Hayes High School. We specialize in solutions that address enterprise, department and individual needs by providing the infrastructure, emerging technologies, and access to associated services.
Each year the Technology Department continues progress towards D.O.E. Technology Benchmark Standards and the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for students, integrating curriculum technology, technology support, and standards for student assessment and evaluation of technology use.
It is the mission of the Technology Department to make Cardinal Hayes High School a flagship for technology for the Archdiocese and in New York.
Vision
Here in the onset of the 21st century, teacher and the content do not have to be in the same place. Teachers must understand how technology fits into the larger curricular and instructional framework. Research has indicated, and we strongly believe, that student engagement remains highest when technology is properly integrated into the curricular framework rather than being an add-on. To succeed in today's classroom and in tomorrow's world of work, teachers must make fundamental changes in the ways they deliver content and students must acquire the tools to be lifelong learners. The full integration of technology into the curriculum is the vehicle for delivering tomorrow's instruction; however, technology should not be the means to an end. Overall we have recognized that student success lies not in rote learning, but in the ability to analyze information, develop concepts and move beyond linear learning.
According to a number of researchers, the largest unmet need for professional development to date is the need to address the instructional strategies required to integrate technology across the curriculum. It is precisely this need that must be met if the rapidly increasing expenditures on technology are to be effectively translated into effective learning environments for students. We intend to meet this identified need by providing meaningful staff development and the modeling of effective practice.
In addition to using technology for the delivery content inside or outside of the classroom, students should be proficient users of technology. They should also have proficiency in selecting the appropriate technology to accomplish a given task more accurately, efficiently and more quickly than with other means.
Students, teachers and staff must know how to use technology to create documents, locate information, collaborate with remote groups, perform calculations and make dynamic presentations. At a minimum, all involved with the integration of technology into the curriculum should understand how to use the following tools and create a product using them: the Web, peer-to-peer workgroup software, word processor, spreadsheet, graphing software, database, drawing software, paint/photo software, sound and music creation/editing software, animation/movie editing software and presentation tools.
All stakeholders should form a community of support around each learner so that technology integration and literacy are valued and encouraged both at home, at school and in the community in general. By providing Web-based instructional materials and resources and by promoting the production of student-made technology based products, both family and community stakeholders can be more involved in the educational process.
At Cardinal Hayes High School the technology department’s infrastructure, maintenance of technology tools, and student instruction help support and enfranchise students in step with this vision.
