Extracurricular Activities
Cardinal Hayes offers more than 40 supervised teams, clubs and activities to
over 1000 students. At Hayes, we believe that our educational program is
enhanced by student involvement, participation, team spirit, and honest
competition. See which activity is right for you!

ALTAR SERVERS The society of Altar Servers is made up of members from all years who volunteer to serve at Mass.
ART CLUB Students develop their creative art skills using a variety of art media.
ASIAN SOCIETY Focuses on issues relevant to the Asian community and interests.
BAND Students work their way through beginner's level to advanced level and on to concert band level. Concert band is the level that qualifies you to play for all school functions including football halftime shows and two major parades in New York City. The Jazz-Rock Ensemble is an extra activity for the most proficient musicians.
BIG BROTHERS Seniors meet with freshmen to discuss their experiences encountered during their four years at Hayes.
BLACK HERITAGE CLUB Focuses on issues relevant to African-American interests.
CARDINAL PLAYERS Students are involved in the school's annual musical productions. Some past productions have been "Pippin," "West Side Story," "The Wiz," "Damn Yankees" and "Jesus Christ Superstar."
CARDINAL SINGERS The official choral group of the school that performs for concerts, masses and public appearances & competitions.
CCD TEACHERS Students can serve as Religion teachers in Catholic parishes to help other students their age from public schools to learn more about their Christianity.
CHANNEL H TV The bi-weekly TV show produced, directed, and edited by Hayes students. Special performances by seniors and for special occasions are usually favorites. *Recognized by the famous Director and alumnus, Martin Scorsese.
CHESS CLUB Students from all years compete with one another as well as in inter-school competition.
DEBATE TEAM / SPEECH CLUB Emphasis on speech, public address, and critical thinking skills.
DIAMOND H CLUB Students who achieve first honors are asked to serve as tutors.
EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN'S PROGRAM Students interact with and assist individuals with mental disabilities.
FUTURE ALUMNI CLUB Students work with the Hayes Alumni Association to assure the future of Hayes.
INTRAMURALS For all students. Games and tournaments are held in basketball, bowling, softball, golf and tennis.
LATINO SOCIETY Focus is on issues relevant to Hispanic interests.
LECTOR SOCIETY Readers at School Liturgies.
LIBRARY CLUB Assists students with homework and written projects for class assignments. Students also assist the Librarian.
LINCOLN HOSPITAL VOLUNTEERS Students working at Lincoln Hospital provide assistance to patients and hospital administrators.
LITERARY CLUB Students develop their literary skills and have their work published in "City Scapes," the Hayes literary magazine.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Students who attain a cumulative average of 85% or higher in all subjects qualify for induction and serve as tutors.
NEWSPAPER "CHALLENGER" Student reporters write articles and conduct interviews that are published in the school newspaper.
PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB Students contribute photographs to the yearbook and newspaper. Photos are taken by the students of all school events and they learn about photography as an art form.
RECRUITING TEAM Students learn the art of public address, make presentations to eighth grade students, and represent Hayes at outside functions.
RETREAT LEADERS Students lead their peers during Holy Week in reflection on religious issues and teachings about life.
SAC The Student Advisory Committee works with the administration on the yearly town hall meeting.
STAGE CREW Students participate in any activity that requires stage use. They construct sets for the play, learn to operate stage lights, paint and set up stage for Mass, and other auditorium functions.
STUDENT COUNCIL Students are selected to represent Hayes at public events and parades and assist the Dean of Discipline in school matters.
TUTORS Faculty and student tutors are available to those students who need additional instruction.
YEARBOOK Students work on drafting all yearbook entries and actively recruit sponsors to purchase advertisements.
SPORTS  
BASEBALL Division 1, CHSSA, consists of three teams: Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshman.
BASKETBALL Division 2, CHSSA, consists of three teams: Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshman.
BOWLING Varsity and Junior Varsity meet weekly at Stadium Lanes.
CROSS COUNTRY Students train for long distance running and compete in city and state meets.
FOOTBALL Division 2, CHSSA, consists of three teams: Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshman.
GOLF CLUB For small group play.
SOCCER All years compete at Varsity level.
TRACK AND FIELD Consists of three levels of play. Students practice five times a week in events such as the 400M, 200M, High Jump and Shot Put. Students compete in city and state meets.

All sports have three teams -- Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshman
and compete within the very competitive Catholic High School
Athletic Association.
